WorkCover Queensland is entering an exciting new chapter, guided by a renewed strategic focus and strong executive leadership shaping our 2030 Strategy. We’re embarking on an enterprise-wide transformation to strengthen our impact and continue making a positive difference in people’s lives.

About the role

WorkCover Queensland is mid-flight on a landmark enterprise transformation. We are moving beyond "just being in the cloud" to a state of high-maturity, automated governance, and Zero Trust security.
We are looking for a Principal Cloud Engineer to champion and be the technical authority for our DevSecOps culture. This isn't just a maintenance role; you will be the driving force shaping our 2030 Strategy, defining how we build, secure, and scale a sophisticated multi-cloud ecosystem (AWS & Azure).
This is a 24-month maximum term contract role with the potential to transition to a permanent position, offering the opportunity to lead a significant uplift in cloud security, platform maturity, and DevSecOps capability in the organisation. This is a senior specialist position with accountability for the end-to-end lifecycle of our cloud platforms. Your mission spans the bridge between high-level architecture and hands-on execution across AWS, Azure, and Kubernetes with a cyber security focus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define the Standard: You will govern and implement state-of-the-art secure platform standards, utilizing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and Policy as Code to ensure our foundations are secure by design and resilient by default.
  • Architect Multi-Cloud Ecosystems: You will own the strategy for our multi-cloud footprint, ensuring seamless integration between AWS and Azure while embedding Zero Trust identity and networking models.
  • Engineering Excellence: You will drive the governance and onboarding of critical cloud services—including sophisticated secure email delivery platform—ensuring reputation, compliance, and security are maintained at an enterprise scale.
  • Technical Leadership: As a Principal, you will act as the "North Star" for all cyber cloud engineering and drive secure by design through the teams, mentoring other engineers and ensuring our platforms are aligned with our Cloud 2030 Strategy.

What We’re Looking For

You are a seasoned engineer who thinks in "Secure by Design" and "Platform Engineering." You have 8+ years of experience in large-scale enterprise environments and have felt the "pain points" of traditional security, which is why you’re passionate about DevSecOps.

  • Deep expertise in AWS and Azure, with the ability to lead cloud architecture, security engineering, and platform governance
  • Proven experience embedding DevSecOps, cloud security, governance, and compliance at scale.
  • Strong hands-on experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform, Ansible, AWS CloudFormation/CDK) and CI/CD automation with embedded security tooling.
  • Strong knowledge of Azure Active Directory, authentication flows, privileged access models, and identity governance.
  • Experience securing Kubernetes and container platforms, ideally with Amazon EKS in production environments.
  • Solid background in cloud networking, hybrid connectivity, and cross-cloud integration patterns.
  • Proficient working across Linux (including Ubuntu) and Windows Server environments.
  • Ability to balance deep technical expertise with strategic vision, influencing platform standards and mentoring engineers.
  • Strategic Communicator: You can explain the "why" behind a Zero Trust architecture to a CISO, and the "how" to a junior developer.
