About the Opportunity: Principal Cloud Engineer

WorkCover is entering an exciting phase of growth and innovation. We’re looking for a Principal Cloud Engineer to take ownership of our Microsoft Azure cloud platform, building and evolving the Azure Cloud Foundation that provides a secure and scalable base for the organisation.

This is a specialist role focused on the full lifecycle of Azure cloud engineering, from architecture and automation to identity, networking, and security. You’ll define platform standards, implement infrastructure-as-code, and embed governance models that underpin all applications and services. The scope includes Azure platform engineering, security, and governance, plus enabling integration and connectivity with AWS for a robust multi-cloud environment.

This role will see you:

  • Own and manage Azure including authentication, identity, user access, networking, and Microsoft stack services.

  • Implement infrastructure-as-code and security controls to ensure a secure, scalable environment.

  • Monitor and optimise Azure, deploying automation and tooling for visibility and performance.

  • Act as point of escalation for complex cloud issues, leading incident resolution and root cause analysis.

  • Ensure interoperability between Azure and AWS environments, maintaining consistency in identity, networking, and security controls.

  • Collaborate on DevOps practices, embedding automation and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Provide technical leadership, creating reference architectures, and reusable patterns.

A bit about you:

  • Minimum 8+ years’ experience delivering the full lifecycle of cloud platforms, from design and build to optimisation and governance, within large-scale, complex enterprise environments.

  • Deep expertise in Azure cloud engineering, including identity management, networking, and security, complemented by solid working knowledge of AWS.

  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, AWS CloudFormation) and CI/CD automation.

  • Strong knowledge of Azure Active Directory, authentication flows, and identity governance.

  • Experience with cloud networking, hybrid connectivity, and cross-cloud integration (AWS knowledge is advantageous).

  • Ability to balance technical depth with strategic vision, influencing standards and mentoring engineers.

  • Proven experience embedding security, governance, and compliance across cloud environments.

  • Strong communicator who can translate complex technical concepts clearly.
